What is a Cabinet of Curiosities Custom Painting?
I make paintings in my sketchbook that compulsively catalog elements of the natural world that I adore: a sweet little fern next to a baby duck next to a spring shad next to a mushroom, and so on. These “cabinet of curiosities” pieces are inspired by vintage science illustrations a la Haeckel’s Art Forms in Nature, which meticulously depict vegetable, animal and mineral arranged in series flat on the page. Mine are looser and weirder and I have a blast making them.
I’m offering a limited edition of custom Cabinet of Curiosities paintings, where you will send me five of your favorite components of nature: your favorite bird, shell, fungus, pollinator, weed, charismatic megafauna, whatever, and I will compose your very own Cabinet of Curiosities piece.
Specifics
All custom Cabinet of Curiosities paintings are on 9x12” white Bristol mixed media 184 lb paper.
If you would like to go bigger than 9x12, select the payment plan option, and note your ideal size in the questionnaire. We can adjust the future two payment plans to account for the cost for larger sizes.
These paintings will be made with linework in permanent ink, washes in watercolor and gouache, and shipped in a hard-sided parcel unframed.
The total cost of each custom Cabinet of Curiosities is $925. There are no refunds. You can either pay in full up front or select the option to pay in four installments.
If this painting is a gift, you will be prompted to indicate this in your purchase, the timing of the gift, and to include their contact info and a gift message upon purchase. I will send them the questionnaire to fill out with their nature favorite five.
Once you fill out the cabinet of curiosities questionnaire, I start work on your piece.
All custom works take anywhere from 4-6 weeks from when the custom questionnaire is filled out to be shipped to you. It’s up to you how long you take to fill out your questionnaire! Taking your time is totally cool, but I won’t start work until that happens. If you have a time constraint, please fill your questionnaire out promptly and indicate that in the form.

Process
Once you have purchased your custom Cabinet of Curiosities painting (full price or installment) I’ll email you the questionnaire. You’ll tell me what your nature favorite five are, and I will begin painting.
Once you’ve filled out the questionnaire, painting begins! I’ll keep you posted as I go.
I’m making these paintings to share the style and fun of my own Cabinet of Curiosities pieces, so once you indicate your favorite components of nature, you’re entrusting me with arrangement, colors, etc. I don’t do sketch review with clients on these paintings, but I will keep you posted on how it’s going!
If you opted for the payment plan, you’ll get further notifications from Squarespace regarding installments status.
Final payment must be received before I can ship to you.
If you’d like to get your piece framed before it comes to you: I can send it to the framer and have it shipped to you. Framing adds time and additional cost to the process- I can’t guarantee how long the framer will need or what costs will be. Framing in NYC, where I live, is often more expensive than custom framing in other areas.
